Why the phone with an i?

Published by Eric under Blackberry, Nokia & Symbian, iPhone

iPhone keyboardThe last post mentioned my impending purchase of an iPhone instead of the Nokia N95. I’ve got another post coming with very practical reasons why the N95 is ahead of its time in the U.S. market.

Until then I’ll share my single most important reason for going iPhone over N95: keyboard.

I bought my E61 to replace my BlackBerry 7100t because I couldn’t stand the SureType keyboard. SureType works great if you’re using common dictionary words but it was slowing me down for my needs. Since then my E61 Qwerty keyboard has racked up mileage for web surfing, email, and SMS.

All the killer features in the world don’t matter a bit of they don’t fulfill your needs. For me, a keyboard is a necessity above all else.

iPhone’s virtual keyboard is going to take some getting used to but at least it’s got one. The N95’s method of entry, predictive T9, is a real deal breaker. Lest we not forget, the idea here is convergence - not multiplicity.

Switching to AT&T Wireless ain’t easy to do - part 5

Published by Eric under Nokia & Symbian, iPhone

AT&T logoThis post is one of a series. Get up to speed:

So it has begun: the swtich.

For reasons coming in a future post, I decided against the unlocked N95 from Mobile Planet. Instead I selected two devices: the Nokia N75 (with activation) and later, the Apple iPhone.

Cost of the N75? -$25 from Amazon. Yes, that’s negative $25…they’re paying me. Of course the iPhone is going to set me back a bit but that why I’ve been selling like a madman on eBay.

Final Cut Pro: fixing the white Canvas

Published by Eric under Editing, Macintosh

Final Cut ProI figured I’d get some logging done and discovered that scrubbing through my sequence didn’t play it in the Canvas. Instead, the Canvas was white with a black X in the upper right.

The solution seems to be selecting the third pop-up menu and selecting RGB instead of Alpha. I’m guessing Alpha may have been set when I was creating Titles. Just a guess mind you.

Thanks to Creative Cow.

Mac OS X 10.5 has A2DP - confirmed

Published by Eric under Macintosh, Music

Bluetooth stereo headsetIt’s Friday evening and a sudden thought occurred to me. Has anyone blogged about OS X 10.5’s support for A2DP? Google to the rescue…

It’s confirmed if you believe a post by claudej in the Apple Discussions forum a few hours after Leopard’s release. Also found a reference at iPhoneApps (with unlinked credit to Engadget). Snippet:

Just installed Leopard & the 1st thing I checked is…

Bluetooth profiles supported by Apple Bluetooth software
Apple’s Bluetooth software supports the following profiles on client devices:

Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP): Controls stereo audio headphones.

Audio Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP): Controls the buttons on headphones and other devices.

My copy of OS X 10.5 won’t arrive until the ACN mails it out (next week I hope) and the rest of you get a chance to kick the tires so I don’t have to. In any event, I’m charging my Bluetooth stereo headsets as I write this. Rock out, recharge, and realize that wired headphones don’t need a power outlet.

I’m guessing an iPhone update is just around the corner to coincide with Leopard’s support for A2DP.

Foto Friday: California wild fires from space

Published by Eric under Art & Photography

This whole week has been eerie with the sky’s orange glow, high temperatures, and smokey aroma due to the fires burning in San Diego and further north of Los Angeles. Ken Kurtis from Reef Seekers Dive Company sent me this photo which explains it all.
