Gizmo VoIP and E61 Revisited

Published by Eric at 11:00 am under Nokia & Symbian, VoIP

Gizmo ProjectAwhile back I was trying to use Gizmo Project on my E61 (v3 firmware) with limited success due to calls dropping the more I used it. Not giving up I sent a support ticket to Gizmo and after a lengthy delay (almost 30 days) I was given settings to try. This is probably the same set as described in Gizmo’s forums but, for some reason, this worked compared to their Symbian-native install wizard (and previous manual configuration attempts). View the settings after the jump.

Gizmo’s call quality is very random (some good, some awful) but the biggest remaining issue is stability. The E61 gets very unhappy if the wi-fi signal is interrupted but the access point is still available. The phone gets sluggish as if it doesn’t know the connection was interrupted and keeps trying (in the background) to reconnect and never gracefully terminates. Restarting resolves the issue.

If the wi-fi access point becomes unavailable (i.e.: leaving the house) the sluggishness doesn’t occur, however the Internet Telephone icon isn’t always removed from the Standby screen.

The settings below apply to version 3.x of the Nokia e61 firmware.

Configuration steps:

1) In Tools -> Settings -> Connection -> SIP settings ->Create the
following profile

Profile Name: sipphone
Service Profile: IETF
Default Access point: [your WLAN AP name]
Public user name: sip:1747xxxxxxx@proxy01.sipphone.com
Use Compression: No
Registration: “Always on”
Use Security: No

Proxy Server: sip:proxy01.sipphone.com
Realm: proxy01.sipphone.com
User Name: 1747xxxxxxx
Password: [You SIPPhone password]
Allow loose routing: Yes
Transport Type: Auto
Port: 5060

Registrar Server: sip:proxy01.sipphone.com
Realm: proxy01.sipphone.com
User Name: 1747xxxxxxx
Password: [Your SIPPhone password]
Transport Type: Auto
Port: 5060

Registration: “Always on” and “When needed” is the switch to turn on
and off SIP registration. So typically when I’m configuring I choose
“When needed”, and after I have done all the 3 steps, I come back here
to change to “Always on” to switch on SIP registration.

Transport Type: Some users have reported that “auto” does not work for them. In these cases, you may want to try “UDP”, or “TCP”. (In theory, the server works with either, but there are many things that could complicate it in your situation)

2) In Tools -> Settings -> Connection -> Internet Tel. Settings ->
Create a new profile for “sipphone”(1747xxxxxxx), name it “sipphone”

3) In Connectivity -> Internet tel. -> Preferred profile -> Choose “sipphone”

At this point you might need to do the previous mentioned step: change
Registration to “Always on” in “SIP settings”. The phone should now
start to get WLAN association, with a fat WLAN icon on top right
screen indicating success. Then it will take a little while to
register to the sipphone.com, after which a small Internet call icon
will appear next to the fat WLAN on icon. Voila! Now you are
registered and ready to make calls!
