Make a home inventory for free

Published by Eric at 7:18 pm under Take Action

I’ve never gotten around to doing a full home inventory. For all I know my renter’s insurance won’t cover the replacement value of all our stuff.  Or even worse, what about an earthquake?

This year I’ll be making my inventory. I won’t have recieipts for everything or even know how much my old Sony receiver cost when new, but I’ll snap photos and start proper with new items.

Of course I’ll computerize the process.

The version of Quicken I use, Premier 2004, has what appears to be an old Windows 95 style application for building an inventory. I can’t find where you can upload photos so it’s already got issues. It does store every other bit of (useless) information you might want about your item, but no photos? No good.
I can’t determine if the latest version of Quicken has improved this application (Intuit, is anyone home over there?) but I came across something else.

And it’s free.

knowyourstuff.org offers free software for Windows and Mac (OS X) to compile the minimum information you’ll need.  Add rooms, photos, prices, serial numbers, etc.  The user interface isn’t old school Windows 95 and the dual-platform compatibility is a plus.
