Console Wars: What Does the Media Really Want?
Yesterday I spent a few hours at Fry’s Electronics since my brother and his girlfriend don’t have them on the East Coast. I checked out their collection of (inexpensive) original Xbox titles, realizing just how many games are written for it. I can get more flavors of Medal of Honor for Xbox than I can the PC.
I got thinking about the Xbox 360 vs. Playstation 3 war going on with the media. Most of their stories end with “let’s wait and see how much better the PS3 will be.”
Who are these people but more importantly what do they want?
First off, I’m not a big fan of Microsoft but I’ll give them credit where it’s due. Windows needs a lot of work but I’m game for the Xbox 360.
Here’s what I see the media complaining about:
- No HDMI or DVI output
- No Blu-Ray or HD-DVD support
- No built-in wi-fi support
- No killer app
I guess they’re waiting for the PS3 to have all that and cost around the same as the Xbox 360. Fat chance.
Do you or your neighbor have an HDTV with HDMI input? Do your current games come on 16 DVD-ROMs? Is your console attached to the TV in close proximity to your cable modem and router? Is bloody realism your idea of a “killer game?”
What I want to know is this: what does the media want in their game console? So far they simply bitch about what the PS3 will have and what the others don’t.
If the PS3 came with a CD shredder should the Xbox and Ninetndo Revolution have one too?
A review about any new game console must contain a list of criteria used in their decision. A legitimate review is based on objective knowledge of the product and where consumer acceptance is headed. It’s not an editorial.
Yes, HDMI and high-def DVD is a technology with wide acceptence in the future. But by the time the next wave of consoles will debut and we’ll start all over again.
