Episode 3

Published by Eric at 8:22 pm under Film & Video, Musings

It’s June 28th and I still haven’t seen Star Wars Episode 3. I guess I should haul my ass to the theater while it’s still playing. Considering the original Star Wars film fueled my interest in science fiction and movie making, I don’t have a single twinge to see Episode 3.

A few reasons:

  • The merchandising comes first these days
  • George won’t let a better Director direct
  • Horrible acting from good actors

Everyone tells me I’ll really enjoy this one. Jar Jar only has one line (for God’s sake, why even one?) but Hayden “Darth” Whatever-his-name still delivers his lines with the finese of slicing sushi with a chainsaw. Sad, really, when you think the very franchise which filled me with unbridled enthusiasm 20+ years ago so easily crushed it later. We’ll see.

Since George won’t be making any more episodes (”thank the maker”) he’ll be re-releasing all six episodes in a pseudo-3D format starting in 2007.

Some finals thoughts about Lucas’ quest for everything-digital.

  • Films aren’t about visual effects, they’re about story-telling
  • Digital actors aren’t coming anytime soon so “let go Luke” and if they were he should’ve replaced Hayden
  • Know your limitations - ILM hasn’t won an Oscar for years, being surpassed by WETA and others, probably because the visuals were attached to better films
