Blast from the past: Commodore rises from the ashes

blog/c64.jpgAccording to Gizmodo, we’ll be seeing new computing devices from Commodore Computer. I haven’t followed the company for years and have no clue who bought their name to rebrand on new crap, but let’s take a quick peek in the rearview mirror before you go buying Commodore branded stuff.

Commodore’s big claim to fame was the Commodore 64 and head-to-head competitor to the Atari line of computers. I never owned a C64 after my VIC-20 and had traded up to the Atari 800, et. al.

I recall the C64 had more games than Atari and was turning out a bigger game machine than a personal computer. The Colecovision was out around this time but wasn’t doing much for the console market.

It’s interesting that new equipment is being branded with the Commodore name but the brand recognition is long gone as only 30+ year olds will have any memory of their by-gone youth watching fat pixels (rather, sprites) float across the screen. Will everyone else assume Commodore is some cheapo off-shore manufacturer?
