Everyone knows the MacBook Pro throws off a lot of heat so I wasn’t sure what to expect with the new MacBook. I dropped into the Manhattan Beach Apple Store and was surprised to find the new MacBook cool to the touch.

On Friday I was greeted with a nice note from my hosting provider that “my CPU utilization had exceed 80% for six hours (a two days).” That was a head-scratcher since nothing is (normally) running on the server to drive up the CPU. After some quick digging what I discovered was akin to a cholesterol-clogged artery of spam.

For web designers in the know this is called the “flash of unstyled content” or FOUC. What happens is IE renders HTML content and applies the style sheet afterward, resulting in a quick transformation into the expected design. Even though the CSS is applied in a flash it’s still perceptible.
I’ve been working with a colleague on a Drupal-powered web site and he got tired of watching FOUC. Here’s his fix.

There’s no doubt the BlackBerry changed how we use mobile phones. In fact, I’ve been a T-Mobile BlackBerry 7100t user for well over a year and I’m hooked. The user interface is well thought-out, super-convenient to navigate with one thumb, and the email features are solid.
Unfortunately that is where it stops. The mobile phone/PDA market is moving on while the BlackBerry stands mostly still, dodging patent blows and holding onto government and corporate contracts with white knuckles.
